What kinds of theft does renters insurance cover?
Renters insurance, also known as contents insurance or HO4 insurance will cover most of your possessions if they’re stolen, including your laptop, your phone, and your bicycle. Your policy won’t cover your car or your pets (if you have any), but those are virtually the only exceptions.
Does renters insurance cover bike theft?
Yes, renters insurance covers bike theft. It doesn’t matter where your bike was parked — if you duck into a store for five minutes and leave your bike tied to a stop sign, it’s still covered if it gets stolen.
Does renters insurance cover car theft?
No, renters insurance doesn’t cover cars from theft. It also won’t protect you if somebody steals part of your car, like the tires or the stereo. To get coverage against auto theft and vandalism, you need to buy auto insurance.
Does renters insurance cover motorcycle theft?
No. Renters insurance doesn’t cover any kind of motor vehicle in any way, including motorcycles.
Does renters insurance cover theft from my car?
Yes, renters insurance covers your possessions if they’re stolen from inside your car. Your things are covered no matter where your car was parked, even if it was miles away from your house.
Does renters insurance cover theft outside the home?
Yes, renters insurance will cover your property if it’s stolen outside your home, as long as it would normally be covered (i.e., it wasn’t a vehicle or a pet).
Does renters insurance cover theft when I’m traveling?
Yes. If you’re traveling and someone steals your luggage, you’re covered. (And if you happen to be on your honeymoon, your wedding ring is also covered by renters insurance if someone decides to swipe it from your hotel room.)
Does renters insurance cover theft when I’m moving?
Yes, renters insurance covers you when you’re in the process of moving. If the moving company steals your property, or if somebody steals the moving truck itself, your policy will cover it. (Your property, that is, not the truck.)
Does renters insurance cover stolen packages?
If somebody steals a package from your doorstep or mailbox, your policy will cover it, although you need to be able to document what you bought and prove that it was actually stolen — with security camera footage, for instance. Your provider won’t pay for it if there’s a chance your item just never arrived.
What other items are covered by renters insurance?
A standard renters insurance policy will protect almost all of your possessions from theft, although coverage for rare and expensive items like firearms, furs, and jewelry is usually capped at a few thousand dollars (these caps on coverage are known as sub-limits). Renters insurance covers cash and other physical money, but that coverage is often capped at just a couple hundred dollars. To fully protect these items, you’ll need to buy additional insurance.
